If you’re in the market for a job, an investment, or a business to run in your off-hours or as an encore career, there are some mighty convincing promoters out there who promise high returns, low risk, and ‘golden’ opportunities just waiting for the right buyer. Take the time to ask the questions that can keep you from getting ripped off.

Financial crimes against senior citizens

The elderly are the fastest growing segment of our society and they are also an important part of our country’s economy. We are living longer but we as a society do not always recognize this population as being at risk. America’s growing senior population is uniquely vulnerable to a broad range of exploitation and abuse. Financial crimes in particular are targeted at seniors with alarming frequency, and are all too often successful.

Exploring the rights of the elderly

Long-Term Care Ombudsmen are advocates for residents of nursing homes, board and care homes, assisted living facilities and similar adult care facilities. They work to resolve problems of individual residents and to bring about changes at the local, state and national levels that will improve residents’ care and quality of life.

How to report fraud, waste and abuse of government services

Medicare fraud happens when Medicare is billed for services or supplies you never got. Medicare fraud costs Medicare a lot of money each year. Examples of possible Medicare fraud

Fraud is different from abuse. Abuse happens when doctors or suppliers don’t follow good medical practices, which leads to unnecessary costs to Medicare, improper payment, or services that aren’t medically necessary. A complaint about the quality of care you got from a doctor, hospital, or other provider or facility isn’t considered fraud or abuse. Your Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) can help you if you have a complaint about your quality of care.

9 steps to lower your blood pressure

Along with age we often experience a higher blood pressure reading. I have a blog dedicated to the specific topic of High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Below are just a few tips to lower your blood pressure.

 1. Stop Smoking- This is listed at the top because of its incredible killing power. Even if you don’t develop cancer from smoking (although it’s extremely likely), the toxic effects of poisoning your body every day are stealthy.
 2. Vascular damage stresses out the body and the poisonous chemicals are so avoidable. And if you don’t smoke- get away from 2nd hand smoke. This is the number 1 factor in lung cancer among NON smokers and the stress it places on the body can account for as much as a 4-5 point systolic spike when exposed.\
 3. Boost immunity- Being sick and lacking the energy to fight off disease stresses out the body in very preventable, easily correctable ways. If you find that you are sick a lot, consider adding probiotics to your diet and find a way to get some safe sunlight.
 4. Naturally occurring vitamin D is the best boost to immunity because it’s free and it’s completely natural. The uptick in serotonin from exposure to UV light also increases immune health. But be mindful of the possibility of getting various skin cancers.
 5. Keep weight down- It’s no secret that obesity is becoming the fastest growing disease in the world, with its partner, Type 2 diabetes. Metabolic disorders are almost a guarantee that you will end up with an extra 10 points systolic.Get the extra 10 or 20 pounds off the belly and watch your high blood pressure fall naturally and safely. It’s a breeze with this one of a kind weight loss program (no diet or workout)…
 6. Stuff stress- The biological stressors like illness and environmental ones (2nd hand smoke for example) do enough to drive up hypertension. Don’t do it any favors by letting anxiety run untreated. There are great alternatives that are inexpensive, effective, and easy to do that will help get emotional stress under control. Learn the most effective method to eliminate stress and drop blood pressure…
 7. Breathe- What many people don’t realize is that not breathing properly or having poor posture will limit the amount of oxygen you take in. Less than optimum O2 intake can spell disaster over time. Find ways to include some deep breathing in your relaxation regimen. The added oxygen will perk up systems throughout the body, making it work more efficiently and this is always a great way to regulate blood pressure. Our Weight-Loss-Breeze exercises helps you lose weight, relief stress and lose weight all by improving your breathing day and night. Unbelievable but it works. Check them out here…
 8. Supplement- Today’s Western diets are terrible. It’s true…the way good food is molested and processed until it’s got a longer shelf life than most people is a disgrace. Salt isn’t the enemy- refined, over-loaded packaged food with astronomical amounts of sodium, however, are. Food no longer sustains us like it did when we ate fresh. So now, we have no choice but to supplement to get the critical nutrients we need. Magnesium, zinc, and calcium are the big 3 that wind up dwindling in diets of those of us in middle age. A cycle of bad events happens as a result, so make sure to get supplemental amounts of these minerals every day. Here is the only Heart Health supplement recommended by Blue Heron Health News….
 9. Limit alcohol- a glass of red wine with dinner is great if the sulfates don’t bother you. Three or more beers every day can, however, be terrible. This is just a source of extra calories and inflammation that your body doesn’t need at all. Hard liquor is even worse. All it serves to do is make you fat, contribute to snoring and sleep apnea (known causes of high blood pressure), and contribute to an addiction. Dump the liquor and beer and instead opt for limited amounts of red wine or Sake.

Getting high blood pressure under control doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, these natural alternatives will very likely end up saving you money if you implement all the changes listed above.

Senior Citizens—Getting Every Vitamin and Mineral You Need From Super Foods

Senior Citizen's Super Foods Comments Off on Senior Citizens—Getting Every Vitamin and Mineral You Need From Super Foods
Mar 242013

TV and magazines are flooded with tips for good nutrition, but you could spend all day watching and reading and still have a long list of questions. So consider this post a short cut to your gaining the benefits you need to for a long, healthy life.

Today’s economy has shrunk many senior’s budget, but you already know that. The sky-rocketing cost of food can be traced to just a very few causes:

 • Weather conditions—on-going drought in the farm belt of the U.S. has caused crop-yields to shrink. We can complain about the weather but can do nothing about it.
 • Fuel costs—gas and diesel fuel costs are soaring because we are dependent on foreign imports. Yet our “leaders” in Washington seem oblivious to the problem. Geologists tell us that the U.S. has greater oil and natural gas reserves than most of the Middle Eastern countries combined! North Dakota is a good example, but those folks are drilling on NON-FEDERAL lands. Getting a permit to drill on Federal Lands is an exercise in futility

So your weekly grocery-shopping trip must be directed at getting the biggest BANG for your buck.

So what’s the secret—there is none. To get the best value at the lowest price means you will have to sacrifice time for quality.

Yes, it so convenient to pick up a pop-it-into-the-microwave dinner, a bag of cookies and myriad other snacks. But for the most part, the nutritional value of this crap is nil. You will need to look for the raw materials and PREPARE them yourself.

Businesses that do the pre-packaging are compelled to list the ingredients in each container. READ THOSE LABELS! Chances are you’ll find chemicals in there that you never heard of—all for the sake of preservation and flavor. Granted—this stuff may taste good but you might as well be eating crabgrass or sawdust .

Of course you may opt in for taking vitamins and minerals from a bottle. I take them when I know what I’m eating only provides the bare minimum of what it takes to maintain good health.

As I mention in other posts, I am not a licensed health care provider or nutritionist. So what I have done in this blog is to search the senior resources who are licensed to offer health information, and I present their research and findings in an easy-to-follow format.

Check out the navigation choices in the right column of this website. A good place to start is the HEALTH MATTERS PAGES Do you know what is considered to be the best vegetable source for essential vitamins and minerals? Follow this link to good health.

Associated Press
WARRENTON, Ore. – Police say a homeowner in the coastal community of Hammond shot and wounded a suspected burglar. Warrenton Police Chief Matthew Workman says an officer heard the shot Friday night, a few minutes after dispatchers received a call from a neighbor saying the homeowner was holding an intruder at gunpoint.
When the officer went inside, he found 25-year-old Tony Tischer wounded on the floor. The officer calmed Tischer until help arrived, and the man was taken to the hospital.
The name of the 44-year-old homeowner has yet to be released. Workman says the man gave his 12-gauge shotgun to the officer and has cooperated with investigators.

Introduction to Health Matters

Health Matters Comments Off on Introduction to Health Matters
Mar 232013

First let me make a couple of facts abundantly clear—I am NOT a healthcare professional, nor have I ever been employed or educated as one. I am NOT a certified nutritionist, nor do I profess to be one. The information I post here is meant to serve as a source of information for folks having legitimate concerns about their health and may have had some difficulty finding reliable information. I am not posting this information to serve as a diagnosis or treatment of various Health Matters. What I post here is for information, entertainment and a time-saving means of getting answers you need from sources known to be professional, fully-qualified sources recognized by the medical profession as providing up-to-date facts about your general health and well-being.

Some of the sources I will include in my posts will include: The National Institutes of Health (NIH), The Mayo Clinic, Duke Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to name a few.

Many of us senior citizens have legitimate concerns over the state of healthcare as the soon to be mandated Obamacare. It may take years before we really know all of the INS and OUTS of this behemoth of legislation. Here’s what Jonathon Capehart of the Washington Post wrote: “But we have to pass the [health care] bill so that you can find out what’s in it….”

For Republicans and conservatives, nothing exemplifies government overreach and arrogance more than those 16 words, uttered by then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi at the Legislative Conference for the National Association of Counties in March 2010…”

I just learned the other day that an additional 800 pages of regulations have been added to the already massive 2,400 pages of Obamacare. My question is, just who is expected to be an authority on the bill’s contents?

What seemingly started out to be a benefit to the American public is now turning into just one more government fiasco. So what do you think about it? Please leave me a comment below

The Uncertainty of Our Times-Looking Back and Wondering What Happened!

Guest Writer, Scottie Campbell

What’s coming next?

It’s politics as usual in Washington and across the fruited plain. I have enjoyed “American idol” much more than watching the Republican debates. At least with “Idol” is that the end result leaves us with a clear cut winner.

Every two weeks we see a new leader in the polls. But on the other side there is no contest. No Democrat has shown any interest in challenging Obama.

I just watched an interview with Sen. Joe Manchin (D), WV. Manchin, while governor saw a balanced budget with cash surpluses for 3 years running. West Virginia proved that when spending is kept in check, the economy remains healthy. So what’s wrong with most of our other states? What’s wrong with the U.S. economy?

CBS’s “Face The Nation” said congress’s approval rating is 14% nationwide. BP (of Gulf Oil Spill Fame) is at 16%. Even Paris Hilton’s approval rating of 15% exceeds that of the people who “govern” us.

And Obama still says that it’s Bush’s fault.

The voters showed their anger when they shoved the Republicans into a majority in the U.S. House. But will they keep it in November 2012. It’s anyone’s guess.

The opinions about our esteemed legislators took a nosedive following the recent “60 Minutes” story of how members of congress are privy to Insider Information, which they are free to use to enrich themselves, when dabbling in the stock market. You or I would go to prison if we did the same thing.

Ever wonder how a typical congressman or woman can show a modest portfolio of assets when elected—but a few terms later they are millionaires? All on a $145,000 a year salary?

And here we are, a bunch of ignorant dolts, 60-70% of whom bitch and complain but are too lazy or disinterested to get out and vote. Just suppose that 65-70% of eligible voters showed up at the polls! What would the outcome be? I probably won’t live long enough to see that happen.

No point in bringing up the unemployment stats—they are still around 9% or slightly higher. And our faithful bureaucrats are very well adept at cooking the books so that figure is probably much, much higher.

This post isn’t about politics—it’s about the grim reality that grows out of a total lack of leadership. Who is at fault? The Democrats and the Republicans! My sincere hope is that the independents will wake up and flock to the voting booths next November. And it all seems to be driven by greed.

Self-Improvement Begins with Self- Analysis

When was the last time you really spent time looking at that person in the mirror? We do it every day—look

into the mirror—but what do you actually see?

I see a tired old man who is often filled with self-doubt. Tired of chasing my tail, but realizing that “If it is to be—it is up to me!”

I have been stressing in other articles that you must first recognize your own self-worth. Without this belief you are doomed to continue as you have in the past. Our daily world is all too often filled with negative input. Let’s face it; the world is in a state of turmoil. Just yesterday there were riots and civil disturbances in Rome, New York, London and Yemen. And those are just the ones that made the major news outlets.

How is one going to maintain a positive posture with so much disruption going on? It ain’t gonna be easy, but if you slip into the context of world-upheaval you are bound to come away with a “down” sense of well- being.

On the other hand . . . maybe you just don’t give a damn. If this is the case, well good for you!

None of us are able to change what happens outside our front door. Those happenings will go on until the rioters are subdued or they just give up and go on about their lives. The point is—regardless of what turn world events take—how you view life on this planet will determine how your day will go.

Some of you are familiar with The Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference –Reinhold Niebuhr

What a powerful sentiment! I am learning to live my life just one day at a time. Yesterday happened and it’s behind me. I sincerely make the effort to live today to the fullest—today is a precious gift from my Higher Power, whom I recognize as God. Perhaps you have a problem with the idea of God. That’s OK! But until you accept the concept that your life is directed by a higher power, a power greater than yourself—very little in your current circumstances will change.

As close as I have come to the principles of psychology was taking one semester of Psyc. 101 during my basic law enforcement training course so many years ago. So I’m not making any attempt to convince you that I am well-versed in psychology or related subjects.

With age comes wisdom—so they say. Like it or not I have learned many useful subjects during my 74 years—but I do not consider myself “wise in the ways of the world.”

Mistakes, missteps and downright blunders populated my life up to this point—but all of them are now behind me. Yes , , , if I had my life to live over I would do things differently. But I was not offered the opportunity to do that. My past life is what it is—past history, and I hope you recognize the fact that in your case—the same is true.

Live for today!

Quit worrying about getting it perfect, getting it right, and getting it right the first time—Carrie Wilkinson

Self-analysis demands a sense of rigorous honesty. If you look into a mirror and see a failure, then that’s what you are doomed to be. But if you see an individual who is capable of grabbing hold of a dream and turning it into reality—then there is hope that you will eventually succeed. No , , , it is not likely to happen overnight, or in a few hours from now and probably won’t happen during the next few weeks.

But if your dream is a realistic one, a dream based on probability and not fantasy—then it can be achieved. And your mind will tell you how to proceed . . . but only if you keep your mind open to that still, small voice that has been trying to speak to you. LISTEN!

Take just a moment to mentally list your good point, your talents, and your skills. Are you using them to advantage or are you wasting them.

It was character that got us out of bed, commitment moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through—Zig Ziglar

It has been said that the average person uses less than 20% of his brain power. So you need to decide if you are average, or above average. The human mind keeps working even if we disregard what it is trying to tell us. Analyze you best qualities and shove the negative thoughts out of reach. You have the power to do what you believe to be right and just. But unless you get started . . . it is all wasted.

What Do You Mean . . . Entitlements

The Safe Zone-Land of The Free, Uncategorized Comments Off on What Do You Mean . . . Entitlements

An “Entitlement?” What the hell is wrong here?

(The author of the following is unknown. I found this article posted on 8 different websites—none of which gave the author credit. So whoever you are—God knows you are right and so is your message.

Remember, not only did you contribute to Social Security but your employer did too. It totaled 15% of your income before taxes.

If you averaged only 30K over your working life, that’s close to $220,500.

If you calculate the future value of $4,500 per year (yours & your employer’s contribution) at a simple 5% (less than what the govt. pays on the money that it borrows), after 49 years of working ( on average ) you’d have $892,919.98.

If you took out only 3% per year, you receive $26,787.60 per year and it would last better than 30 years, and that’s with no interest paid on that final amount on deposit!

If you bought an annuity and it paid 4% per year, you’d have a lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month.

The folks in Washington have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madoff ever had.

Entitlement my ass, I paid cash for my social security insurance!!!! Just because they borrowed the money, doesn’t make my benefits some kind of charity or handout!! Congressional benefits, aka. free health care, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days, now that’s welfare, and they have the nerve to call my retirement entitlements ! scroll down…

Emergency Rooms for their general health care -At just one hospital the cost to tax payers totaled over 25 million a year!!!

Someone please tell me what the HELL’s wrong with all the people that run this country!

We’re “broke” & can’t help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans, Homeless etc.,?

In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti, Chile, and Turkey. And now Pakistan, home of bin Laden.

Literally, BILLIONS of DOLLARS!!! Our retired seniors living on a ‘fixed income’ receive no aid nor do they get any breaks while our government and religious organizations pour Hundreds of Billions of $$$$$$’s and Tons of Food to Foreign Countries!

They call Social Security and Medicare an entitlement even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives and now when its time for us to collect, the government is running out of money.

Why did the government borrow from it in the first place? We have hundreds of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans.

AMERICA: a country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed hungry, elderly going without ‘needed’ meds, and mentally ill without treatment -etc,etc. YET,

They have a ‘Benefit’ for the people of Haiti on 12 TV stations, ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents clothes, bedding, doctors and medical supplies.

Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave ‘US’ the same support they give to other countries. SAD?

YEAH, OK, SO WHEN DO WE GET PISSED AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? 99% of people won’t have the guts to forward this. I’m one of the 1% — I Just Did
